Express yourself. Sing your own song. Use language and lyrics to paint a picture that tells your story, clearly, concisely, convincingly, and honestly. This approach is critical to scholarly writing, e.g., high school, college, and graduate level writing.

The Seasons was the result of a songwriting workshop I taught for Art Beyond Sight on 12/13/11. The theme was memories and seasons. I brought in a poem I had written that morning. I titled it, I Remember. This became the basis for The Seasons. I asked the workshop participants to share their associations and memories of the holiday season. Some of the suggestions included being with family, Christmas trees, sledding, and snow. I applied this line of questioning to all four seasons, then added the fifth verse to "bring the song home" and make it a complete story. The person singing along with me is Anthony, a talented and wonderful young man who helped make the workshop a success.

I remember winter, winter brings the snow
The warmth of all my family and Christmas trees aglow
All the kids a’ sleighing, ready, set, let’s go
Oh, I remember winter, ‘cause winter brings the snow
I remember springtime, as flowers start to bloom
We chased away the winter blues and chased away the gloom
We welcomed springtime’s sun and welcomed springtime’s moon
Oh, I remember springtime, as flowers start to bloom
I remember summer, swimming in the lake
Keeping cool with ice cream, and Grandma’s chocolate cake
Ice-cold lemonade, an orange-chocolate shake
I remember summer, swimming in the lake
I remember autumn, and autumn leaves that fall
The bounty of the harvest, the beauty of it all
The colors and the splendor, the corn that grew so tall
Oh, I remember autumn and autumn leaves that fall
I remember seasons, and all of them were good
My friends and all my family, in my old neighborhood
I wouldn’t change a thing, even if I could
Oh, I remember seasons, and all of them were good
All the seasons of my life
Yes, all of them were good.
